Summer One-Day Classes

Summer One-Day Classes are designed to teach Native American culture, arts, crafts, and technologies to adults and youngsters at least 10 years old (or who have completed the 4th grade.) Classes are held at Moundville Archaeological Park. Transportation can be provided from Smith Hall on the University of Alabama campus for those who request it. All materials are provided. Just bring your lunch and wear old clothes. Classes are limited to 14 students (unless otherwise noted) and teachers earn Professional Development Hours.

Reed Basketry - July 9
Learn basic techniques of split-reed basketry still used today by Native Americans. Spend a day at Moundville creating your own distinctive design and bring home a work of art!

Gourds, Gourds, Gourds - July 14
Gourds have been put to a variety of uses by Native Americans. Pick a gourd and make your own bowl, bottle or mask. Decorate it using traditional designs or let your imagination run wild!

Flintknapping - July 19
Flintknapping is the art of making arrow and spear points (and much more) from rocks that break like glass. An expert guides you through this remarkable technology that has recently resurged as a modern art form. When you're through you'll have one or more arrowheads and a growing fascination. Class limited to 8 students, ages 12 and up.

Beadwork - July 21
Make a bracelet, belt or choker necklace on a bead loom. Learn actual Native American bead patterns and techniques.
