Moundville Native American Festival
October
1-4, 2008
One
of Alabama’s Top 20 Tourism Events and designated a Cultural
Olympiad Event, the annual Moundville Native American Festival will
be held October 1-4 at The University of Alabama’s Moundville
Archaeological Park. There, Native American performing artists,
craftspeople, and musicians will entertain and educate visitors
about the rich culture and heritage that makes Southeastern Indians
unique.

Ancient
rulers and thousands of their subjects thrived in a city behind
huge wooden walls that once surrounded the Moundville site. These
prehistoric Native American farmed, hunted and fished. Their society
recognized nobles by birth and praised the feats of great artists,
warriors and holy people. Each year, descendants of this vibrant
culture return, celebrating the South’s rich Indian heritage
at the Moundville Native American Festival.
Described as the Big Apple of the 14th century and a National Historic
Landmark, Moundville Archaeological Park contains 320-acres of more
than 20 preserved prehistoric Indian mounds, campgrounds, picnic
areas, a boardwalk nature trail, a theater, a riverbend lodge on
the Black Warrior, and museum of some of the finest Mississippian-era
artifacts ever found in North America.

park is open daily 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Group discounts are available.
A variety of programs for children and adults are offered teaching

UA’s Moundville Archaeological Park is just 14 miles outside
The University of Alabama campus at 1 Mound State Pkwy. in Moundville,
south of I-20/59 and Tuscaloosa off Alabama Highway 69.
NEWS:
The Jones Archaeological Museum is closed for renovation.
It will reopen Spring, 2009. The rest of the park is open as usual.
