Special Saturday Classes

Moundville offers several special classes designed to teach one aspect of Native American culture at an affordable cost. All materials are provided. Just bring your lunch and wear old clothes. Unless otherwise noted, all classes are for ages 14 to adult.

Reed Baskets - February 23
Thousands of years before pottery was invented, Southeastern Indians made baskets, bags, mats and more out of natural materials such as cane, white oak and grasses. This class teaches students two basic types of weaving while they create a one of a kind basket from split reed. Class fee is $40 per person.

Gourd Bowls, Bottles, Baskets and Masks - March 15
Gourds were the first plant actively cultivated by Native Americans some 7000 years ago. In the squash family, gourds are inedible, but make wonderful containers. Pick out your own gourd and make a bowl, bottle, basket or mask. Decorate it using traditional designs or let your imagination run wild and make a modern work of art. Class fee is $40 per person.

Beadwork - May 24
Beading expert Cat Sloan, and her protégé Ella Jones, teach several beading techniques including brick stitch, right angle weave and peyote stitch. Also learn how to weave on a loom, and take home at leash one unique piece of beadwork. This is a great Monther/Daughter class! Class fee is $40 per person.

Flintknapping - July 12
(Ages 12 & up)

Flintknapping is the art of making knives and arrow and spear points from rocks that break like glass. Experts guide students through this remarkable technology that has recently emerged as a modern art form. When finished each student will make at least one arrow point and will take home a growing fascination. Class fee is $40 per person. Take home your very own tool kit for an additional $40.
